At PLAN, we understand the importance of preparing for the future, especially when it involves making thoughtful decisions that affect our families. Our recent small group Future Planning session offered a deep dive into how to approach these decisions with care and understanding.
Exploring Key Planning Tools
During the session, we explored the “Final Acts of Kindness” workbook, focusing specifically on pages 9-11 which deal with personal reflections and decisions, and pages 14-31, which guide parents in capturing essential logistics. These discussions are crucial as they help families consider how to handle their affairs in a way that honours their wishes and supports their loved ones.
Addressing Legal Questions
A significant part of the session was dedicated to addressing common legal concerns such as Power of Attorney and Trusts. To aid in understanding, we shared resources that offer detailed information on setting up trusts, accessible through the following links:
- BC Government’s Guide to Disability Assistance Trusts
- BC Government’s Policies on Trusts
- Questions to Ask a Trust Company
These documents provide a foundation for understanding how trusts can be tailored to meet individual family needs and protect the interests of people with disabilities.
Choosing the Right Trust Company
Choosing the right trust company is a pivotal decision for many families. To assist in this process, we provided a list of trust companies that have received positive feedback from other PLAN members. While we do not recommend any specific company over another, we encourage families to consider these options:
- TD Canada Trust
- Contacts: Warren Yee (Warren.Yee@td.com) and Scott Hind (Scott.Hind@td.com)
- Solus Trust
- Contacts: Jessica (jlo@solustrust.com) and John (jpin@solustrust.com)
- Website
- Truvera Trust
- Contacts: Jerry Halma (jhalma@truvera.ca) and Julia Weintraub (JWeintraub@truvera.ca)
- Website
- BMO Private Wealth
- Contact: Rhys Webb, TEP (rhys.webb@bmo.com)
- Profile
We offer these recommendations to provide families with a starting point in their search for a trust company that understands their unique circumstances and can offer the specialized services they require.
At PLAN, we are committed to helping families navigate the complexities of future planning with confidence and support. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to reach out. Together, we can ensure a secure and caring future for our loved ones.
