There’s been a lot of recent chatter about re-engaging and deepening network connections. A few of us gathered recently to discuss how asking to hear family stories of holidays, childhood, and vacations can give clues to who could be re-engaged or invited for communications, for coffee and eventually to future network gatherings. We wondered about the next generation, where are: the cousins, the family friend’s kids, the childhood vacation friends and the former neighbours. We expect that this story telling will give us some clues and hints.

We lingered with the idea that even for people who haven’t been as able to connect or attend gatherings lately, that there could still be ways to stay in touch with smaller group connections, calls and facetimes. We reminded ourselves that long distance is just fine, the Lower Mainland is a destination for many afterall! A family recently shared they actually see more of a network member who’s moved away when they visit for holidays than when they lived locally. Holidays can just roll that way!

In another example, a connector mentioned that they’ve noticed seemingly every second neighbour knows our focus person. Because these interactions are often quick waves and hellos, we discussed the idea of business cards or invitations to the next gathering/event. In other scenarios, we know that families have looked for names in yearbooks, people have been supported to google classmates names and mentors have knocked on neighbours doors. All towards invitation.

We also gave thought to the idea of learning these stories as a back up plan to the germ season that’s descending upon us. If network gatherings have to shift to virtual gathering, these family stories are great ways to grab a hot chocolate and cozily relive, share and connect!
