Three weeks into PLAN’s Solutions-Based Advocacy gathering, the learning, connections, and actions are already taking root and beginning to grow.
Over the past few months, Julia and Meaghen developed a simple curriculum to guide these early weeks. Rebecca offered generous feedback and encouragement along the way, and Barb Goode joined to ground the conversations through reflections from her HERstory book. As with many new initiatives, there were moments of wondering whether the material would resonate or feel relevant. The answer arrived in the most PLAN way possible — people showed up.
Six self-advocates, parents, and several team members gathered, bringing curiosity, lived experience, and a willingness to learn together.
In true PLAN style, these meetings did not take place in a boardroom or classroom, but around Julia’s living room coffee table. The setting created the tone: informal, relational, and real. It also meant that Rocky the puppy happily (and humorously) co-hosted each session. Barb joined from the table as well, helping to bridge in-person and Zoom participation. The space allowed for mindfulness moments, spontaneous dance breaks, and the kind of conversation that only happens when people feel at ease.
Week One focused on introductions, grounding ourselves in relationship. Barb shared HERstory reminders, and the group explored the core principles and materials of solutions-based advocacy.
Week Two deepened the learning while highlighting advocacy already happening in everyday life:
* Kirsteen shared poetry centered on peace and self-determination.
* Mark demonstrated leadership through organizing the Best Buddies Walk fundraiser.
* Julia described relationship-building with local and national politicians.
* Janette introduced her dance book focused on accessibility.
* Lyle reflected on attending a protest calling for peace in Gaza.
These stories helped the group recognize that advocacy is not abstract — it is already alive in personal passions, relationships, and community presence.
Week Three shifted toward action. Ideas began to take shape, from place-based art and awareness initiatives to requests for meetings with elected officials. What started as conversation is now moving toward tangible steps.
While the coming week marks the final “formal” session, the group is clear about what continues:
* Individuals will carry forward the actions they have begun.
* Families practice solutions-based advocacy every day.
* There is deep appreciation for gathering in ways that create shared momentum.
These conversations are not confined to a program or timeline. They remain open, evolving, and available whenever people come together with the desire to build change through relationships.
With appreciation,
Julia, Barb Goode, Rocky, and Meaghen
