Life Beyond Services: Navigating natural and formal supports in the community

Workshop at the Inclusion BC Conference:
Come learn about a study about natural support (support given freely out of love, loyalty, and necessity) and formal support (government or privately funded services).
This research is guided by respected family advocates – the late Vickie Cammack, and Donna Thompson; three service organizations: PLAN – Rebecca Pauls, Vela Canada – Linda Perry CM and posAbilities – Monique Nelson.
An advisory committee whose members have lived expertise of disability and caregiving were engaged throughout the study. In this workshop, the team will share results of a scoping review on natural supports in disability in Canada and findings from interviews and focus groups including individuals served, family members, and employees of the three BC-based organizations.
After the presentation, participants will discuss the findings that are most relevant to them and their advocacy work. They will also have the opportunity to offer suggestions about how to move this research to action and positive change.
